CDR Paul P. Sumagaysay assumed duties as Chef Staff Officer on 2 December 2014.

A native of the Philippines and raised in North Hollywood, California, Sumagaysay enlisted in the Navy as an Electronic Technician through the Naval Nuclear Power Program and was a recipient of the Broadening Opportunity for Officer Select and Training Program. He graduated from the University of San Diego with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Economics. He holds a Master of Science degree in Systems Engineering with a discipline in Information Warfare from the Naval Post Graduate School.

Sumagaysay’s assignments at sea include Combat Information Center Officer aboard dock landing ship USS Fort Fisher (LSD 40), Strike and Training Officer aboard guided-missile destroyer USS John Paul Jones (DDG 53), Operations Officer aboard guided-missile frigate USS Stephen W. Groves (FFG 29), N3 for Destroyer Squadron 21, Landing Craft Officer for Assault Craft Unit One (ACU 1), Assistant Chief Engineer and Auxiliaries Officer aboard aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73), and N3 for Task Force 49 aboard USS America (LHA 6).

In direct support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, he was Joint Task Force Paladin and 101st Airbome’s Counter IED Electronic Warfare (CREW) Theater Chief Engineer.

Ashore, Sumagaysay served as the Marine Expeditionary Unit Officer with First Marine Expeditionary Force and Future Operations Officer at Expeditionary Strike Group Three.

His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards) and Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards).
